For the past year Missy has been working on Vespers for a New Dark Age, music for Victoire created in collaboration with percussionist Glenn Kotche, poet Matthew Zapruder, vocalists Mellissa Hughes, Virginia Warnken and Martha Cluver, fashion designer Andrea Katz, and of course the fabulous instrumentalists in the band (Olivia De Prato, Eileen Mack, Lorna Krier and Eleonore Oppenheim).  This new work will premiere at Carnegie Hall along with pieces by Glenn Kotche and John Luther Adams, and will appear on Victoire’s next album, due out in fall, 2014.

“This piece is the product of several chance encounters with amazing people.  I first met percussionist Glenn Kotche in 2009 when we were both working with the Chicago-based group eighth blackbird.  I met fashion designer Andrea Katz when she came to a Victoire show in New York last summer. I met poet Matthew Zapruder through poet friends in San Francisco last year, and have had a long and hilarious email correspondence with him ever since.  I felt that Victoire’s Carnegie Hall debut had to include all of these incredible people.

Vespers for a New Dark Age is my distorted, blasphemous version of a traditional Vespers prayer service, in which I’ve replaced the customary text with new poems by Matthew Zapruder.  Matthew’s poems are beautifully haunting and very much of our time; they explore the way we confront technology, ghosts, death, doubt and God in our “new dark age”. Vespers for a New Dark Age will be sung by Mellissa, Virginia and Martha, and accompanied by Victoire along with Glenn on percussion.  Designer Andrea Katz has created new, wearable pieces of art for the members of the band, pieces specifically designed for this piece.

I’m incredibly excited for this premiere, and I hope you can join me and the rest of Victoire at Carnegie Hall!”
